What does a football club president to save his club from relegation? No, he doesn't fire the manager, he doesn't seek added support from fans, he doesn't even invest more money in motivating his own players. He takes an alleged €100,000 and bribes his opponents to lose in his favor.
At least this was the case in "Bella" Italia, in the beautiful city of Catania, where a new fixing scandal arose these days. Antonino Pulvirenti, president of Catania FC, allegedly fixed five matches according to prosecutors, to save his team from relegation. What's even worse - he did confirm to have done that according to Gazzetta dello Sport! What he is also accused of, is to having have bet on those matches. Was this a desperate way to save the team or was it used to hide his real intentions to trick bookmakers? Or was it both?
Whatever happens, that's not going to end like nothing happened and more likely than not, there will be sporting sanctions for the club from the Lega Serie B authorities and the and Italian FA.
No lastly, it's a new shadow on the already turbulent and weaker year by year Italian football.
